Studying usage and experiences of mHealth technology for its improved usability - Mixed methods research for understanding users’ long-term engagement with the Few Touch application for self-management of Type 2 diabetes mellitus -
(Doctoral thesis; Doktorgradsavhandling, 2014-02-28)In spite of a number of mHealth (use of mobile computing for health care) studies targeting people with diabetes, there has not yet been any clear evidence of its effect. Due to obscurity regarding subjects’ engagement with each component of the provided technology, it is not clear which factors are important and why. Considering that behavior change is a path of improvement in self-management of ... -
Simultaneous observations of a Mesospheric Inversion Layer and turbulence during the ECOMA-2010 rocket campaign
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2013)From 19 November to 19 December 2010 the fourth and final ECOMA rocket campaign was conducted at Andøya Rocket Range (69 N, 16 E) in northern Norway. We present and discuss measurement results obtained during the last rocket launch labelled ECOMA09 when simultaneous and true common volume in situ measurements of temperature and turbulence supported by ground-based lidar observations reveal ... -
Ultrasonic properties of all-printed piezoelectric polymer transducers
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2013)The ability of producing ultrasonic transducers from screen-printing has been explored experimentally, through printing and characterization of a large number of transducers. In an allprinted test design, 124 transducers with four different electrode sizes ranging from 1 to 4.9 mm2, were printed layer-by-layer on a high performance polyethyleneimine polymer. Inks from ferroelectric and conductive ... -
The Nornir run-time system for parallel programs using Kahn process networks on multi-core machines-a flexible alternative to MapReduce
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2013)Even though shared-memory concurrency is a paradigm frequently used for developing parallel applications on small- and middle-sized machines, experience has shown that it is hard to use. This is largely caused by synchronization primitives which are low-level, inherently non-deterministic, and, consequently, non-intuitive to use. In this paper, we present the Nornir run-time system. Nornir is ... -
Robustness of predator-prey models for confinement regime transitions in fusion plasmas
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2013)Energy transport and confinement in tokamak fusion plasmas is usually determined by the coupled nonlinear interactions of small-scale drift turbulence and larger scale coherent nonlinear structures, such as zonal flows, together with free energy sources such as temperature gradients. Zero-dimensional models, designed to embody plausible physical narratives for these interactions, can help to ... -
Enhanced EISCAT UHF backscatter during high-energy auroral electron precipitation
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2013)Natural enhancements in the backscattered power of incoherent scatter radars up to 5 orders of magnitudes above the thermal backscatter are sometimes observed at high latitudes. Recently observations of enhancements in the backscattered power including a feature at zero Doppler shift have been reported. These enhancements are limited in altitude to tens of kilometers. The zero Doppler shift ... -
Observations of HF-induced instability in the auroral E region
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2013)Enhancements were observed in backscattered radar power during an ionospheric heating experiment from two distinct altitude regions in the auroral E region above Tromsø. For the experiment the EISCAT Tromsø heater was operated with O mode and X mode alternated at 4.04 MHz, close to the 3rd electron gyroharmonic. Ion-line data recorded with the EISCAT UHF radar reveal different temporal ... -
Functional Knowledge Transfer for High-accuracy Prediction of Under-studied Biological Processes
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2013)A key challenge in genetics is identifying the functional roles of genes in pathways. Numerous functional genomics techniques (e.g. machine learning) that predict protein function have been developed to address this question. These methods generally build from existing annotations of genes to pathways and thus are often unable to identify additional genes participating in processes that are not ... -
Mapping climate change in European temperature distributions
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2013)Climate change poses challenges for decision makers across society, not just in preparing for the climate of the future but even when planning for the climate of the present day. When making climate sensitive decisions, policy makers and adaptation planners would benefit from information on local scales and for user-specific quantiles (e.g. the hottest/coldest 5% of days) and thresholds (e.g. ... -
Model-driven diabetes care: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2013)Background: People with type 1 diabetes who use electronic self-help tools register a large amount of information about their disease on their participating devices; however, this information is rarely utilized beyond the immediate investigation. We have developed a diabetes diary for mobile phones and a statistics-based feedback module, which we have named Diastat, to give data-driven feedback ... -
Telehealth at UC Davis—A 20-Year Experience
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2013)Telehealth at the University of California Health System began as a telefetal monitoring connection with a rural hospital in 1992 and evolved to become the Center for Health and Technology (CHT) in 2000. The Center supports the vision of the University of California Davis (UC Davis) Health System—a healthier world through bold innovation. The CHT focuses on the four pillars of the academic ... -
Models for electrostatic drift waves with density variations along magnetic field lines
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2013)Drift waves with vertical magnetic fields in gravitational ionospheres are considered where the unperturbed plasma density is enhanced in a magnetic flux tube. The gravitational field gives rise to an overall decrease of plasma density for increasing altitude. Simple models predict that drift waves with finite vertical wave vector components can increase in amplitude merely due to a conservation of ... -
Intermittent fluctuations in the Alcator C-Mod scrape-off layer
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2013)Fluctuations in the boundary region of the Alcator C-Mod tokamak have been analyzed using gas puff imaging data. It is found that the fluctuation amplitudes in the near scrape-off layer follow a normal distribution while the far scrape-off layer fluctuations are dominated by large amplitude bursts due to radial motion of blob-like structures and have a positively skewed and flattened amplitude ... -

Development of the mesospheric Na layer at 69 degrees N during the Geminids meteor shower 2010
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2013)The ECOMA sounding rocket campaign in 2010 was performed to investigate the charge state and number density of meteoric smoke particles during the Geminids meteor shower in December 2010. The ALOMAR Na lidar contributed to the campaign with measurements of sodium number density, temperature and line-of-sight wind between 80 and 110 km altitude over Andøya in northern Norway. This paper ... -
Spare Part Transportation Management in High North
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2013)The demanding physical conditions of the Arctic, remote location, and uncertainty regarding the travel time can both heighten the challenges related to transportation of spare part in the region. Managing to get the appropriate path for transportation of spare parts for oil and gas industries in the region, is one of the major and demanding tasks. In this paper we develop the concept of ... -

Thermospheric atomic oxygen density estimates using the EISCAT Svalbard Radar
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2013)Coupling between the ionized and neutral atmosphere through particle collisions allows an indirect study of the neutral atmosphere through measurements of ionospheric plasma parameters. We estimate the neutral density of the upper thermosphere above ~250 km with the European Incoherent Scatter Svalbard Radar (ESR) using the year-long operations of the International Polar Year from March 2007 to ... -
Long-range memory in Earth's surface temperature on time scales from months to centuries
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2013)The paper explores the hypothesis that the temporal global temperature response can be modeled as a long-range memory (LRM) stochastic process characterized by a Hurst exponent 0.5 < H≲1.0 on time scales from months to decades. The LRM is a mathematical representation of the multitude of response times associated with the various subsystems. By analysis of instrumental and reconstructed temperature ...
