With ubiquitous globalization, the need for cultural and intercultural competence is growing accordingly. Such competence requires language competence as a primary basis for listening, understanding, and communicating, one one’s own terms and on one’s target groups’ terms, for example in business and in everyday life settings. The interesting question is how Norway handles such challenges, not least by preparing new generations for such a globalized and multicultural world.
The schools and their language teachers can provide such cultural competence, at least ideally. Together with teaching students a foreign language, the teachers have the opportunity and the responsibility of transferring cultural competence, for successful interaction in a multicultural society and world.
This thesis investigates to what extent the foreign language teachers feel sufficiently prepared and qualified for such challenges, of transferring such cultural and intercultural competence, within the context of the Norwegian school system, with its specific opportunities and constraints.
