Weight change and cancer
(Doctoral thesis; Doktorgradsavhandling, 2020-05-25)<p><i>Background: </i>The obesity prevalence has reached pandemic dimensions. The cancer incidence has also increased worldwide, and several cancers are related to body fatness. However, there are uncertainties weather the velocity and magnitude of weight gain, independent of body fatness, increase cancer risk. Moreover, there are few studies on short-term weight gain and site-specific cancers. Thus, ... -
The impact of the physical environment on intrapartum maternity care: Identification of eight crucial building spaces

The study explores the spatial physical characteristics that can support the design of spaces to promote the health and well-being of women, their supporters, and maternity care professionals.<p><p> <i>Bac ... -
Retail investor experience, asset learning, and portfolio risk-adjusted returns
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel, 2019-10-13)It is well documented in the finance literature that retail investors (households) underperform on a risk-adjusted basis when trading in securities markets. More recently, however, there is growing evidence that some retail investors increase risk-adjusted returns from security selection (portfolio concentration). I show that these mixed findings are driven by investor trading experience. Using ... -
The Inter-Generational Transmission of Indigenous Knowledge By Nenets Women: Viewed in the context of the state educational system of Russia
(Doctoral thesis; Doktorgradsavhandling, 2020-05-14)Nenets reindeer herders of the Russian arctic are described by researchers as the most successful, in terms of the number of their reindeer and the number of people involved in this unique way of life. However, the continuation of this unique form of nomadic culture is at immediate risk. There is a problem, the recruitment and training of future generations of nomadic Nenets reindeer herders, in ... -
Some inequalities related to strong convergence of Riesz logarithmic means
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2020-03-23)In this paper we derive a new strong convergence theorem of Riesz logarithmic means of the one-dimensional Vilenkin–Fourier (Walsh–Fourier) series. The corresponding inequality is pointed out and it is also proved that the inequality is in a sense sharp, at least for the case with Walsh–Fourier series. -
Kortejärvi Veiki moraine plateau - a key to the glacial history of northern Sweden
(Master thesis; Mastergradsoppgave, 2020-03-30)In many parts of Scandinavia, the glacial history is more well established than in northern Sweden. The Veiki moraines in northeastern Sweden presumably store information about the Weichselian glaciations. The moraines were formed when stagnant ice was slowly melting under a thick debris cover, forming water filled sinkholes, that were left as elevated ice-walled lake plains when the ice finally ... -
Carbonylative Suzuki-Miyaura couplings of sterically hindered aryl halides: Synthesis of 2-aroylbenzoate derivatives
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2020-02-10)We have developed a carbonylative approach to the synthesis of diversely substituted 2-aroylbenzoate esters featuring a new protocol for the carbonylative coupling of aryl bromides with boronic acids and a new strategy to favour carbonylative over non-carbonylative reactions. Two different synthetic pathways – (i) the alkoxycarbonylation of 2-bromo benzophenones and (ii) the carbonylative Suzuki–Miyaura ... -
Documentation Studies at the University of Tromsø: A new way to educate librarians?
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2019-12-05)The article presents an overview of the history of Documentation Studies at the University of Tromsø in Norway, a study programme founded in 1996. The article starts with a brief historical background to the degree’s foundation before the main ideas behind the choice of the concept are described. The last part of the article is devoted to the alterations made to the programme over the last 15 years ... -
Moderate inclusivism and the conversational translation proviso: Revising Habermas's ethics of citizenship
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2019)Habermas’ ‘ethics of citizenship’ raises a number of relevant concerns about the dangers of a secularistic exclusion of religious contributions to public deliberation, on the one hand, and the dangers of religious conflict and sectarianism in politics, on the other. Agreeing largely with these concerns, the paper identities four problems with Habermas’ approach, and attempts to overcome them: (a) ... -
Has the time come to use near-infrared spectroscopy in your science classroom?
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2020-04)Smartphones, coupled with small mobile sensors, make it possible to work with nearinfrared (NIR) spectroscopy in science classrooms. NIR spectroscopy has become a standard analytical technology in various industries. These new devices enable students to create their own data in real time. This article presents an inquiry-based teaching unit, in which students analyse seemingly identical white crystals ... -
Using mathematical modelling to investigate the adaptive divergence of whitefish in Fennoscandia
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2020-04-30)Modern speciation theory has greatly benefited from a variety of simple mathematical models focusing on the conditions and patterns of speciation and diversification in the presence of gene flow. Unfortunately the application of general theoretical concepts and tools to specific ecological systems remains a challenge. Here we apply modeling tools to better understand adaptive divergence of whitefish ... -
Redefining bilingualism as a spectrum of experiences that differentially affects brain structure and function
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2019-03-26)Learning and using an additional language is shown to have an impact on the structure and function of the brain, including in regions involved in cognitive control and the connections between them. However, the available evidence remains variable in terms of the localization, extent, and trajectory of these effects. Variability likely stems from the fact that bilingualism has been routinely ... -
Pain and epiphany: Julian of Norwich' Revelations of Divine Love as Pathography
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2019-10-31)This article discusses the medieval English mystic Julian of Norwich’s autobiographical text <i>Revelations of Divine Love</i> and the significance of physical pain in Julian’s holy visions. Applying Anne H. Hawkins’ idea of the ‘myth of rebirth’, the article argues that although Julian’s work is not a narrative about illness as such, it may nevertheless be read as a medieval pathography or as a ... -
Indigenous elders' perspective and position
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2019)Inspired by a great deal of work on Indigenous methodologies, I feel it natural to start this essay by positioning myself. I will ponder the more or less institutionalized concept of an ‘Indigenous Elders’ approach.’ I will do this from a combined perspective of a Sámi Elder (at least one who is approaching the age of becoming an Elder) and from an academic vantage point in which Indigenous scholarship ... -
Collision-free path finding for dynamic gaming and real time robot navigation
(Peer reviewed; Book; Chapter, 2020-02-13)Collision-free path finding is crucial for multi-agent traversing environments like gaming systems. An efficient and accurate technique is proposed for avoiding collisions with potential obstacles in virtual and real time environments. Potential field is a coherent technique but it eventuates with various problems like static map usage and pre-calculated potential field map of the environment. It ... -

(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2019-07-16)The aim of this study was to find out whether dietary supplementation with Calanus oil (a novel marine oil) or infusion of exenatide (an incretin mimetic) could counteract obesity-induced alterations in myocardial metabolism and improve postischemic recovery of left ventricular (LV) function. Female C57bl/6J mice received high-fat diet (HFD, 45% energy from fat) for 12 wk followed by 8-wk feeding ... -
The two Norwegian official written standards, bokmål and nynorsk. Linguistic and ideological implications of national bilingualism and biliteracy.
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2019-07-09)The long-lasting Norwegian history of official biliteracy with two equal written standards has attracted the interest of many scholars, both nationally and internationally. The present paper gives an overview of the historical development more or less similar to what is found in most Norwegian language histories, though with a different perspective. The paper discusses and seeks to answer the following ...
