Submaximally symmetric almost quaternionic structures
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2017-11-10)The symmetry dimension of a geometric structure is the dimension of its symmetry algebra. We investigate symmetries of almost quaternionic structures of quaternionic dimension <i>n</i>. The maximal possible symmetry is realized by the quaternionic projective space H<i>P n</i>, which is flat and has the symmetry algebra sl(<i>n</i> + 1, H) of dimension 4<i>n</i> 2 + ... -
DNA barcoding of the northern Northeast Atlantic skates (Chondrichthyes, Rajiformes), with remarks on the widely distributed starry ray
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2014-06-23)The skate fauna in the northern Northeast (NE) Atlantic is poorly investigated, and misidentifications are common. Here, ‘DNA barcoding’ was used to analyse 105 specimens of 15 species previously reported from the area to investigate the occurrence of species. Of these 15 species, three were new to the region and confirmed with voucher specimens. Three previously reported taxa were not obtained from ... -
Thermogenic methane injection via bubble transport into the upper Arctic Ocean from the hydrate-charged Vestnesa Ridge, Svalbard
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2014-04-21)We use new gas‐hydrate geochemistry analyses, echosounder data, and three‐dimensional P‐Cable seismic data to study a gas‐hydrate and free‐gas system in 1200 m water depth at the Vestnesa Ridge offshore NW Svalbard. Geochemical measurements of gas from hydrates collected at the ridge revealed a thermogenic source. The presence of thermogenic gas and temperatures of ∼3.3°C result in a shallow top of ... -
Parenting stress among Norwegian kinship and non-kinship foster parents
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2017-05-14)There are several studies conducted on parenting stress, and the conclusion in the parenting stress research literature is generally that parenting stress decreases the quality of the parent-child relationship. There are however few studies on parenting stress comparing kinship homes to ordinary types of foster homes. The aims of this study were to measure parenting stress in kinship and non-kinship ... -
Repeated measurements of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) from 1979 to 2007 in males from Northern Norway: Assessing time trends, compound correlations and relations to age/birth cohort
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2014-06)<p><i>Background</i> Longitudinal biomonitoring studies can provide unique information on how human concentrations change over time, but have so far not been conducted for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in a background exposed population.</p> <p> <i>Objectives</i> The objectives of this study were to determine: i) serum PFAS time trends on an individual level; ii) relative ... -
Enhanced CO2 uptake at a shallow Arctic Ocean seep field overwhelms the positive warming potential of emitted methane
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2017-05-08)Continued warming of the Arctic Ocean in coming decades is projected to trigger the release of teragrams (1 Tg = 106 tons) of methane from thawing subsea permafrost on shallow continental shelves and dissociation of methane hydrate on upper continental slopes. On the shallow shelves (<100 m water depth), methane released from the seafloor may reach the atmosphere and potentially amplify global ... -
Ignoring symptoms: The process of normalising sensory experiences after cancer
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2017-03-01)This article explores the process of interpreting bodily sensations after completed cancer treatment. We base our analysis on repeated interviews over a period of 12 months with eight participants who had different cancer diagnoses. By using the concepts of ‘sensa- tion schemas’ and ‘sensation scripts’, we explore how sensation schemas of cancer dominated in the first period, while schemas of late ... -
How Often Do Thermally Excited 630.0 nm Emissions Occur in the Polar Ionosphere?
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2017-12-17)This paper studies thermally excited emissions in the polar ionosphere derived from European Incoherent Scatter Svalbard radar measurements from the years 2000–2015. The peak occurrence is found around magnetic noon, where the radar observations show cusp-like characteristics. The ionospheric, interplanetary magnetic field and solar wind conditions favor dayside magnetic reconnection as the dominant ... -
Inflammatory response of macrophages and trophoblasts investigated using structured illumination microscopy and quantitative phase microscopy
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2017-09)<i>Introduction</i>: The super-resolution capability of structured illumination microscopy (SIM) (100 nm) enables 3D imaging of mitochondria, and label-free quantitative phase microscopy (QPM) provides nanoscale quantitative phase values relating to cellular thickness and the refractive index of cellular content. -
Fish Health Management in Uganda. From Soft Laws to Practical Implementation
(Master thesis; Mastergradsoppgave, 2018-05-25)Fish farming is becoming an increasingly important part of the food supply for the growing world population. Uganda is one of the countries in Africa where fish farming is on the rise, largely dominated by Nile tilapia and North Africa Catfish. With abundant water resources, an ideal climate and a market demand for fish, the conditions for development of the fish farming sector are in place. In this ... -

Tydelig ledelse - situasjonsbetinget balansekunst.

Impacts of tertiary education on the social status of women, in relation to local social obligations and expectations: a case study from Mababe, Botswana
(Master thesis; Mastergradsoppgave, 2018-05-15)This project is about how exposure to different cultural values can impact the indigeneity of women. It focuses of how the culture of the majority, which is mostly imposed on these indigenous women through education and tertiary institutions, impacts the choices they make, as compared to the expectations and obligations of own community. I am using the case study on one indigenous group located in ... -
Problems and questions in derived adjectives
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2017)This article overviews the main questions that emerge from cross-linguistic analysis of morphologically complex adjectives. It is discussed that the problems arise from the fact that it is difficult to identify any positive properties of adjectives capable of singling them out with respect to other categories. Thus, what has been classified as a derived adjective frequently is a version of the base ... -
Transmission dynamics of the monogenean Gyrodactylus salaris under seminatural conditions
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2014-07-12)Tracking individual variation in the dynamics of parasite infections in wild populations is often complicated by lack of knowledge of the epidemiological history of hosts. Whereas the dynamics and development of Gyrodactylus salaris Malmberg, 1957, on Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., are known from laboratory studies, knowledge about infection development on individual wild fishes is currently sparse. ... -

Introduction: Sensations, Symptoms and Healthcare Seeking
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2017-03)Inspired by the sensory turn in the humanities, anthropologists have coined the term ‘an anthropology of the senses’ to describe the study of the perceptual construction and output of bodily sensations and sense-modalities (cf. Howes 2006; Nichter 2008). Starting from the premise that different cultures and social settings configure, elaborate and extend the senses in different directions, key ...
