A traditional one-dimensional understanding of European politics has been challenged in recent decades in international political science. The analyzes of Norwegian politics have always been multidimensional, and in that sense one can perhaps say that the analyzes of European politics have caught up with Norwegian analyses. At the same time this two-dimensional European framework gives a slightly new perspective on Norwegian politics. This article attempts to show how such a two-dimensional understanding from European politics can be applied to Norwegian politics to understand recent developments and coalitions in Norwegian politics. Firstly, we see that a larger proportion of Norwegian voters, as in the rest of Europe, have positions that do not directly coincide with being either fully progressive or fully conservative. In a two-dimensional understanding of Norwegian politics, both the welfare chauvinist and market cosmopolitan groups have grown significantly from 1990 to 2017. Secondly, these changes are also reflected in the political landscape, and the second dimension can explain many of the conflicts both internally on the traditional left and on the right side. If the second dimension becomes even more important for voters and parties, today’s Norwegian party coalitions will be challenged.
