To Do or To Listen? Student Active Learning vs. the Lecture
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2021-08-04)This paper is a discussion of the concept ‘student active forms of learning’. It aims not at conclusions, but at a perspicuous representation—a map for future navigation and understanding of the concept. From the perspective of philosophy of education, I characterize and discuss issues relating to student active learning in the paper. The context for my discussion is higher education. Further, I ... -
Public libraries in Norway and the Covid-19 pandemic
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2021)Public libraries have played a central role in natural disasters such as the tornado in the Gulf of Mexico in 2004/2005 and the tsunami in the Tohoku region of Japan in 2011, but also in the financial crisis from 2008. While public libraries in these crises took on a very active role in providing shelter and infrastructure for their citizens, health crises seem to tell a different story. The Covid-19 ... -
Verb placement variation in Swedish and Danish
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2022-01-17)This article gives a summary of the Swedish and Danish data on verb placement in the Nordic Word order Database (NWD; Lundquist et al. 2019). The data were collected using an elicited production paradigm. I discuss variation in verb placement in Danish in four constructions: in embedded clauses with respect to adverbs (embedded V2), in main clauses with respect to preverbal and sentence-medial ... -
Variable verb second in Norwegian main and embedded clauses
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2022-01-17)Norwegian has verb second (V2) word order in main but not embedded clauses. Although as a first approximation V2 is a phenomenon characteristic of root clauses, it has long been known that it occurs also in a restricted set of embedded clauses in Norwegian, as in many, if not all, of the other North Germanic languages. Many Norwegian dialects in addition allow deviations from the standard V2 word ... -
Målreising i Nord-Noreg 1898-1940.
Perceptions of Cultural Diversity among Pre-service Teachers
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2021-12-14)The present article examines how a group of Norwegian pre-service teachers of English and other foreign languages perceived the term “cultural diversity” when student-centred learning activities were used. A qualitative inquiry, comprising data retrieved from three student-centred activities: student narratives, role-playing, and focus group discussion are thematically analysed. Theoretical ... -
The thousand-question Spanish general knowledge database
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2021-01-29)General knowledge questionnaires have been ubiquitously used to study a wide variety of phenomena, such as illusory truth, error correction and tip-ofthe-tongue situations. However, their normings are highly restricted to the territory and the time period they in which they were obtained. This requires that new normings are obtained for each new territory in which they be used. Here, we present ... -
When Defense Is Not Enough: On Things, Archaeological Theory, and the Politics of Misrepresentation
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2021-08-19)This article responds to a growing tide of critique targeting select new materialist and object-oriented approaches in archaeology. Here we take a stand against this critical discourse not so much to counter actual and legitimate differences in how we conceive of archaeology and its role, but to target the exaggerations, excesses, and errors by which it increasingly is articulated and which restrict ... -
The third age On old age in a comparative anthropological perspective
Denne integreringen ... -
Rural Pupils Making their Way through the Norwegian Education System: Enablements, Constraints and Agency in a Northern Norwegian Context
(Doctoral thesis; Doktorgradsavhandling, 2022-03-11)This thesis focuses on pupils’ agency and their experiences with and reflections on educational choices. The theoretical framework draws on Margaret Archer’s morphogenetic approach as it examines parts of the educational situational logics, as well as her Three-Stage Model in which structural and cultural properties shape agents’ situations. The thesis thus explores constraints and enablements pupils ... -

Diversity Policies as Tools to Increase Participation and Encounters.
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2021-12-02)Informed by the concept of diversity, this article discusses the issue of municipalities’ facilitation of ethnic diversity and integration in two cities in northern Norway. Municipalities are in a position to accommodate ethnic diversity in more pragmatic ways than the nation-state through local policies. We explore diversity policies in three different areas: democratic participation, urban planning, ... -
Buried in between: Re-interpreting the Skjoldehamn Medieval Bog Burial of Arctic Norway
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2021-12-17)THE 11TH-CENTURY SKJOLDEHAMN GRAVE is a remarkable accidental find, discovered in a bog in coastal Arctic Norway in 1936. The grave consisted of a fully clothed skeleton wrapped in a wool blanket, lashed with leather straps and tin ring-ornamented woven bands. The body was laid on a reindeer pelt, which in turn was placed on sticks of birch. Finally, the body was covered with birch bark, and potentially ... -
The state as a whiteman, the whiteman as a |'hun: Personhood, recognition, and the politics of knowability in the Kalahari
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2022-02-24)The Ju|’hoansi of east central Namibia sometimes refer to the state as a whiteman and to the whiteman as a /’hun (steenbok). In this article, I contextualize these naming practices by tracing the history of colonial encounters on the fringes of the Western Kalahari through a small-scale animist perspective. I then discuss what this means for the concept of ‘recognition’, which I treat as a two-way ... -
Predicting Second Language Proficiency with Resting-State Brain Rhythms.
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2021-05-24)Understanding what traits facilitate second language (L2) learning has been the focus of many psycholinguistic studies for the last thirty years. One source of insight comes from quantitative electroencephalography (qEEG), i.e., electrical brain activity recorded from the scalp. Using qEEG, Prat et al. [1] found that functional brain connectivity is predictive of language learning ability. This study ... -

Data were gathered through focus groups, in-depth individual interviews, and qualitative questionnaires and analyzed thematically. The results ... -
Productivity and the acquisition of gender
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2021-02-04)Children's differing learning trajectories cross-linguistically have been at the forefront of gender acquisition research, often with conflicting results and conclusions. As a result, the source of children's different learning behaviors in gender acquisition has been unclear. I argue that children's gender acquisition is driven by the search for productive patterns. First, I provide corpus studies ...
