This chapter discusses Volkhard Krech’s system theoretical approach to the evolution of religion. The chapter starts with biographical notes on the author. The second part of the chapter deals with system theory in the study of religion. The third part turns to the use of Charles Peirce’s semiotics in the book. The fourth part examines the distinctive features of Krech’s model, with special attention to the concept and dimensions of religion. The fifth part deals with the origin of religion through selected examples, and the sixth part considers the evolution of religion in the system model. The final part of the chapter offers a critical discussion of the theory, focusing on social systems, semiotics, and evolution.en_US
