Bakgrunn

Selektiv mutisme er når et barn er taus i noen situasjoner, men snakker som normalt i andre. Diagnosen er en relativt sjelden, og kan ofte bli oversett siden mange ikke vet om tilstanden. Det er derfor viktig å sette lys på tilstanden slik at barna blir oppdaget, og får den hjelpen og støtten de trenger for å komme seg ut av tausheten.

Formål og problemstilling

Denne masteroppgaven setter fokus på hvordan foreldre av barn med selektiv mutisme opplever og erfarer skolen. Formålet med prosjektet er å øke kunnskap til ansatte i skolen, hjelpetjenester og folk flest om selektiv mutisme og hvordan arbeidet med skolen oppleves for foreldrene. Dermed er problemstillingen for oppgaven «Hvordan erfarer foreldre til barn med selektiv mutisme sitt barns møte med skolearenaen?».

Metode

Undersøkelsen ble utført med bruk av kvalitative semistrukturerte intervjuer, med en fenomenologisk tilnærming. Utvalget besto av fire foreldre av barn med selektiv mutisme, hvor alle hadde barn i skolen i ulike aldre. Analysen av datamaterialet ble gjort med bruk av temaanalyse.

Resultat

Hovedfunnene i undersøkelsen viser at foreldrene opplever at skolen gjør lite for å hjelpe barnas tilstand. Selv om foreldrene utrykker for et godt samarbeid mellom hjem og skole, beskriver de at de ofte føler seg alene i systemet og at barna deres blir nedprioritert i skolen, i favør for andre barn med mer utagerende vansker, eller på grunn av ressursmangel i skolen. Selv om mye kan tyde på at barn med selektiv mutisme sliter sosialt, viser informantene at dette ikke er tilfelle, barna finner sin plass i miljøet og skaper gode vennskap, selv om noen vennskap er nonverbale.

Abstract

Background

Selective mutism is when a child is silent in some situations but speaks normally in others. The diagnosis is relatively rare, which can lead to the child being overlooked since many people do not know about the condition. It is therefore important to shed light on the condition so that the children are detected, and get the help and support they need to overcome the condition.

Purpose and aim of the study

This master's thesis focuses on how parents of children with selective mutism experience school for their children. The purpose of the project is to increase knowledge among school employees, support services and the general public about selective mutism, and how working with the schools is experienced by the parents. Thus, the research question for the thesis is "How do parents of children with selective mutism experience their child's encounter with the school arena?".

Method

The study was conducted using qualitative semi-structured interviews, with a phenomenological approach. The sample consisted of four parents of children with selective mutism, all of whom had children in school of different ages. The analysis of the data was done using thematic analysis.

Results

The main findings of the study show that parents experience that the school does little to help their children's condition. Although parents express good cooperation between home and school, they describe that they often feel alone in the system and that their children are less prioritized in school, in favor of other children with more externalizing difficulties, or due to a lack of resources in the school. Although much may indicate that children with selective mutism struggle socially, the informants show that this is not the case, the children find their place in the environment and create good friendships, even if some friendships are nonverbal.
