Circularity, Naturalism, and Desire-Based Reasons
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2017-10)In this paper, I propose a critique of the naturalist version of the Desire-Based Reasons Model. I first set the scene by spelling out the connection between naturalism and the Model. After this, I introduce Christine Korsgaard’s circularity argument against what she calls the instrumental principle. Since Korsgaard’s targets, officially, were non-naturalist advocates of the principle, I show why ... -
Reasons and Beliefs
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2018)The present paper identifies a challenge for a certain view of practical reasons, according to which practical reasons (both normative and motivating) are states of affairs. The problem is that those who endorse such a view seem forced to maintain both a) that the contents of beliefs are states of affairs and b) that the conception according to which the contents of beliefs are states of affairs is ... -
Synonymy and the a priori: A problem for Boghossian's model
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2017-08-03)According to Paul Boghossian, some truths are knowable a priori because they are expressed by epistemically analytic sentences. In such cases, understanding the sentence is meant to suffice for justified belief in the proposition it expresses. One alleged route from understanding to justification goes via what Boghossian calls 'the synonymy model'. This article presents a dilemma for this model and ... -
Semantic Facts and a Priori Knowledge
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2017-01-18)This paper is a response to a paper by Marcus Giaquinto in which he argues that lexical meaning is moderately indeterminate and that this poses a problem for the linguistic view of a priori knowledge. I argue that accepting the moderate indeterminacy thesis as he presents it is perfectly compatible with both the linguistic view in general and the specific suggestion that some a priori knowledge ... -
Morality and Prudence: A Case for Substantial Overlap and Limited Conflict
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2017-06-07)INTRODUCTION: It is virtually impossible to say anything substantial about how morality and prudence relate to one another unless we make assumptions about their content. In what follows, I will make use of a minimal definition, according to which prudence concerns the rational pursuit of personal interest and happiness. In this connection, I use happiness as an evaluative term, as something ... -
Institutional consequentialism and global governance
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2018-03-13)Elsewhere we have responded to the so-called demandingness objection to consequentialism – that consequentialism is excessively demanding and is therefore unacceptable as a moral theory – by introducing the theoretical position we call institutional consequentialism. This is a consequentialist view that, however, requires institutional systems, and not individuals, to follow the consequentialist ... -
The Concept of Entrapment
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2017-08-23)Our question is this: What makes an act one of entrapment? We make a standard distinction between legal entrapment, which is carried out by parties acting in their capacities as (or as deputies of) law-enforcement agents, and civil entrapment, which is not. We aim to provide a definition of entrapment that covers both and which, for reasons we explain, does not settle questions of ... -
Hvorfor ethvert samfunn trenger filosofi
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2017)Discussing three issues that are central to philosophical thinking, the article argues that each and every society requires the kind of reflection that philosophy entails. The first issue concerns the claim that we have to give reasons for our assertions, the second addresses the idea and significance of truth, and a third pivotal philosophical question deals with the importance of acknowledging ... -
Sivilisasjonens sårbarhet. David Humes analyse av samfunnsmessig utvikling
(Book; Bok, 2017)The book describes and interprets the Scottish philosopher and historian David Hume’s theory of the basis of a society’s development from barbarism to civilization and for the maintenance of a civilized society. An analysis of the development and maintenance of civilization should, according to Hume, be conducted along three dimensions, a political, an economic and one concerning civil society. ... -
Arbeidsmarkedet for norske filosofer i dag
Conceptions of meaning in music. On the possibility of meaning in absolute music
(Master thesis; Mastergradsoppgave, 2017-11-01)The thesis aims to refute claims from Peter Kivy that so-called ““Absolute music,” then, as defined, is pure instrumental music without text, title, program, dramatic setting, or any other extra-musical apparatus. It is music, as defined, without representational, narrative, semantic or other extra-musical content”. Or, that music is a “quasi-syntactical structure of sound understandable solely in ... -
Populismens tvetydighet.
Causation in Evidence-Based Medicine: In reply to Strand and Parkkinen
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2014)Strand and Parkkinen criticize our dispositional account of causation in evidence-based medicine for failing to provide a proper epistemology of causal knowledge. In particular, they claim that we do not explain how causal inferences should be drawn. In response, we point out that dispositionalism does indeed have an account of the epistemology of causation, including counterfactual dependence, ... -
Causation and evidence-based practice: an ontological review
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2012-09-21)This paper explores the nature of causation within the framework of evidence-based practice (EBP) for health care. The aims of the paper were first to define and evaluate how causation is presently accounted for in EBP; second, to present an alternative causal account by which health care can develop in both its clinical application and its scientific research activity. The paper was premised on the ... -

Critical Thinking in Online Educational Discussions Measured as Progress through Inquiry Phases: A Discussion of the Cognitive Presence Construct in the Community of Inquiry Framework
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2016)The development of critical thinking is a rationale for higher education and an important aspect of online educational discussions. A key component in most accounts of critical thinking is to evaluate the tenability of claims. The community of inquiry framework is among the most influential frameworks for research on online educational discussions. In this framework, cognitive presence accounts ... -
The politics of Dissensus and Political Liberalism
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2016-07-20)An emerging branch of political theory, ‘the politics of dissensus’, starts out from the premise that in order to understand the politics of constitutional democracies, one needs to focus on parliamentary politics, which compromises both institutional settings and debates. Politics takes place among adversaries, and dissensus and argumentation pro et contra is the rule. The focus on the conditions ...
