The relationship between cognitive control and second language proficiency
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2020-10-20)In the past 20 years, the field of bilingualism has made a substantial effort to better understand the set of cognitive mechanisms that allow bilinguals to functionally manage and use their languages. Among the mechanisms that have been identified, cognitive control has been posited to be key for proficient bilingual language processing and use. However, the role of cognitive control in developing ... -
Word order variation in heritage languages: Subject shift and object shift in Norwegian
(Chapter; Bokkapittel, 2020-05-29)This study investigates two word order phenomena in Norwegian heritage language spoken in the US, subject shift (SS) and object shift (OS). SS and OS occur in syntactic environments where (pronominal) subjects and objects may either precede or follow negation. This paper explores to what extent these two phenomena in Heritage Norwegian are affected by the factors frequency and structural ... -
Contemporary Sámi Art in the Making of Sámi Art History: The Work of Geir Tore Holm, Outi Pieski and Lena Stenberg
(Chapter; Bokkapittel, 2017)This essay is an attempt to answer the following questions: How do contemporary artists like Geir Tore Holm, Outi Pieski and Lena Stenberg contribute to Sámi art history? And does their work have a reflexive effect on this history? I was initially asked to address these topics as part of the public defence of my doctoral dissertation entitled Samisk kunst i norsk kunsthistorie: Historiografiske riss ... -

The Use of LAM-institutions in the Digital Age
(Chapter; Bokkapittel, 2020)Amidst much speculation on the impact of digitalization, there have been no lack of visions for the future of libraries, archives, and museums (LAM institutions). Sometimes digitalization has been perceived as a useful tool for fulfilling the aims of enlightenment and free access to information and cultural heritage, and other times the digital development has been framed as a threat or game-changer ... -

Formal Linguistics and Language Education: A View from Bilingualism Research
(Chapter; Bokkapittel, 2020-06-11)This chapter aims to underline the importance of bilingualism research from a formal linguistic perspective for second language pedagogy. In doing so, we highlight where the two fields of inquiry overlap with each other and offer insights into how language pedagogy can benefit from information gained by psycholinguistic studies on specific properties of grammar and its development. Keywords ... -
Being, learning, doing: A palace for the children? A Tween’s Library Seen from the User’s Perspectives
(Chapter; Bokkapittel, 2020)In this chapter we investigate the library’s empowering aspects within the context of Biblo Tøyen, a library designed and open only for children between ten and fifteen. It is unique in a Norwegian context, but inspired by TioTretton in Stockholm, and the Library of 100 talents in Holland. Both these libraries have been designed and developed with the involvement of users – the children themselves ... -

Language dominance in the previously acquired languages modulates the rate of third language (L3) development over time: A longitudinal study
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2020-07-31)This study examines the extent to which extra-linguistic factors such as language dominance, order of acquisition and language of instruction are deterministic for multilingual transfer selection and subsequent development. We test two groups of Catalan-Spanish bilinguals acquiring English as an L3 in a controlled setting. We first examine judgements and interpretations of negative quantifiers and ... -
Institutional Convergence and Divergence in Norwegian Cultural Policy. Central Government LAM-organization 1999 – 2019
(Chapter; Bokkapittel, 2020-09-07)This article raises the question of why ABM–u was not continued as a cultural policy instrument for the LAM sector. The question provides a basis for elucidating conditions for state governance in the cultural heritage area, contributing to the academic and professional discussion of organizational and governance models in the public sector and reorganization processes in Norwegian public ... -
Like, Share and Comment. The Use of Facebook by Public Libraries and Museums: A Case Study from Tromsø, Norway
(Chapter; Bokkapittel, 2020-09-07)Historically, libraries, archives and museums (LAMs) have been perceived as institutions providing infrastructure for an open and enlightened public discourse. While Norwegian public libraries are regulated by law that focuses on libraries being providers of knowledge and agents of popular enlightenment as well as local meeting places and arenas for debate,¹ the Norwegian museum sector is governed by ... -
Beyond Alzheimer’s Disease: Can bilingualism be a more generalized protective factor in neurodegeneration?
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2020-08-31)Bilingualism has been argued to have an impact on cognition and brain structure. Effects have been reported across the lifespan: from healthy children to ageing adults, including clinical (ageing) populations. It has been argued that active bilingualism may significantly contribute to the delaying of the expression of Alzheimer’s disease symptoms. If bilingualism plays an ameliorative role against ... -
Diphthongs are micro-feet: Prominence and sonority in the nucleus
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2020)In this paper we look at prominence in diphthongs and argue that diphthongs are structured in the same way metrical feet are. We propose a set of OT constraints that generates a typology of micro-feet. These are either iambic or trochaic or they are quality/sonority-sensitive with default to iamb or trochee in case of sonority plateaus (i.e., ui and iu). Crucially, we did not find any ... -
Nasal consonants, sonority, and syllable phonotactics: the dual nasal hypothesis
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2020-04-28)We investigate the phonotactic behaviour of nasal consonants in a database of over 200 languages. Our findings challenge the common classification of nasals as intermediate between obstruents and liquids on the sonority hierarchy. Instead, we propose that there are two types of nasal consonants, one group with lower sonority than liquids and one with higher sonority. We propose that these two types ... -
