Soapstone in northern Norway: research status, production evidence and quarry survey results
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel, 2015)Archaeological research on the production and use of soapstone artifacts in northern Norway remains limited in scope and the region has received marginal attention in the Norwegian soapstone literature. Archaeological documentation of soapstone quarry locations has been minimal, although the Geological Survey of Norway has systematically surveyed a majority of the soapstone exposures in the ... -
Beck's Song Reader: An Unbound Music Book
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2016)The pop/alternative musician Beck created a stir in the music world when he released his 2012 “album” Song Reader as a book compilation of individual pieces of sheet music. This included a guide to reading music notation, together with an introduction describing the work’s intentions and inviting readers to perform their own versions of the songs. Two years later, a recording of the songs interpreted ... -

Influence of Reproductive Status: Home Range Size in Water Voles (Arvicola amphibius)
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2016-04-26)The relationship between home range and reproductive status of water voles (Arvicola amphibius) was studied by radio-tracking on an island off the coast of northern Norway in 2006–2009. The aim was to test assumptions about the species’ social structure relative to other microtines. Juveniles used fairly small ranges (about 400 m²), with no difference between males and females. Subadults, overwintered ... -
Modelled drift patterns of fish larvae link coastal morphology to seabird colony distribution
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2016-05-13)Colonial breeding is an evolutionary puzzle, as the benefits of breeding in high densities are still not fully explained. Although the dynamics of existing colonies are increasingly understood, few studies have addressed the initial formation of colonies, and empirical tests are rare. Using a high-resolution larval drift model, we here document that the distribution of seabird colonies along the ... -
Later at higher latitudes: large-scale variability in seabird breeding timing and synchronicity
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2016-05-28)In seasonal environments, organisms are expected to optimally schedule reproduction within an annual range of environmental conditions. Latitudinal gradients generate a range of seasonality to which we can expect adaptations to have evolved, and can be used to explore drivers of timing strategies across species’ distribution ranges. This study compares the timing of egg hatching in four seabird ... -

Past Arctic aliens have passed away, current ones may stay
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2015-07-04)Increased human activity and climate change are expected to increase the numbers and impact of alien species in the Arctic, but knowledge of alien species is poor in most Arctic regions. Through field investigations over the last 10 years, and review of alien vascular plant records for the high Arctic Archipelago Svalbard over the past 130 years, we explored long term trends in persistence and ... -

Characterization of 14 microsatellite markers for Silene acaulis (Caryophyllaceae)
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2015-09-08)Premise of the study: Fifty candidate microsatellite markers, generated using 454 shotgun sequencing, were tested for the widespread arctic/alpine herb Silene acaulis (Caryophyllaceae). Methods and Results: Fourteen out of 50 markers resulted in polymorphic products with profiles that enabled interpretation. The numbers of alleles per locus ranged from two to six, and the expected heterozygosity ... -
Biological introduction risks from shipping in a warming Arctic
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2015-12-14)Several decades of research on invasive marine species have yielded a broad understanding of the nature of species invasion mechanisms and associated threats globally. However, this is not true of the Arctic, a region where ongoing climatic changes may promote species invasion. Here, we evaluated risks associated with non-indigenous propagule loads discharged with ships' ballast water to the high-Arctic ... -

(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2015)Focusing on women’s and men’s participation, this article sheds light on the reindeer herding on the island of Hinnøya and in the southern areas of the county of Troms, Northern Norway, during the 18th and 19th centuries. In this region the Sámi and the Norwegian populations have been living side by side for a long period. In addition to hunting and gathering, the economy of the Sámi population was ...
