Oppgaven begrenser seg til å se på områdene algebra og funksjoner. Problemstillingen er: "Hvilke forskjeller og likheter er det mellom tre ulike lærebøkers presentasjon ... -
Dirichlet process cluster kernel
(Master thesis; Mastergradsoppgave, 2017-05-16)This thesis aims to apply the Dirichlet process mixture model to the cluster kernel framework. The probabilistic cluster kernel is extended with a Bayesian nonparametric model to avoid critical parameters within the model. The Dirichlet process cluster kernel demonstrate advantages compared to the probabilistic cluster kernel in both classification and clustering. Additionally, the two dimensional ... -
Modelling and analysis of health care services using regression and Markov models
(Master thesis; Mastergradsoppgave, 2017-05-12)Using data from electronic health records this thesis aims to model and analyse health care services provided to adult patients with chronic conditions. Two aspects of health care services, with unique aims, have been examined. The first aspect is related to the aim of investigating factors affecting the patients' self experienced quality of the health care encounters with regards to satisfaction, ... -
Almost affine codes and matroids
(Master thesis; Mastergradsoppgave, 2017-05-15)In this thesis we study various types of block codes, like linear, mutlti-linear, almost affine codes. We also look at how these codes can be described by associated matroids. In addition we look at flags (chains) of codes and see how their behavior can be described using demi-matroids. We also introduce weight polynomials for almost affine codes. -
On the Ewald-Oseen scattering formulation for linear and nonlinear transient wave scattering
(Master thesis; Mastergradsoppgave, 2017-05-16)In this thesis work we develop and apply EOS formulation to three scattering problems: two of them are 1D problems and one is 2D. The first chapter comprises EOS formulations and numerical implementation for 1D scattering problems. Also in this chapter we use different numerical methods to solve test problem and choose the most stable and accurate method for solving of the given 1D problems. ... -
First wind shear observation in PMSE with the tristatic EISCAT VHF radar
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2016-11-05)The Polar Summer Mesosphere has the lowest temperatures that occur in the entire Earth system. Water ice particles below the optically observable size range participate there in the formation of strong radar echoes (Polar Mesospheric Summer Echoes, PMSE). To study PMSE we carried out observations with the European Incoherent Scatter (EISCAT) VHF and EISCAT UHF radar simultaneously from a site near ... -
Spatial and temporal variability in MLT turbulence inferred from in situ and ground-based observations during the WADIS-1 sounding rocket campaign
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2017-04-10)In summer 2013 the WADIS-1 sounding rocket campaign was conducted at the Andøya Space Center (ACS) in northern Norway (69 N, 16 E). Among other things, it addressed the question of the variability in mesosphere/lower thermosphere (MLT) turbulence, both in time and space. A unique feature of the WADIS project was multi-point turbulence sounding applying different measurement techniques including ... -

A Framework for Mellin Kind Series Expansion Methods
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel, 2017-07-31)Mellin kind statistics (MKS) is the framework which arises if the Fourier transform is replaced with the Mellin transform when computing the characteristic function from the probability density function. We may then proceed to retrieve logarithmic moments and cumulants, that have important applications in the analysis of heavy-tailed distribution models for nonnegative random variables. In this paper ... -
A revisit of the Gram-Charlier and Edgeworth series expansions
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel, 2017-07-31)In this paper we make several observations on the Gram- Charlier and Edgeworth series, which are methods for modeling and approximating probability density functions. We present a simplified derivation which highlights both the similarity and the differences of the series expansions, that are often obscured by alternative derivations. We also introduce a reformulation of the Edgeworth series ... -
Automated Lung Sound Analysis
(Master thesis; Mastergradsoppgave, 2016-06-01)Lungs sounds has been used as a diagnostic tool for centuries. The usefulness of listening to lung sounds, or pulmonary auscultation, as a definite diagnostic method has been diminished by advances in medical imaging such as chest X-Ray, but these advanced methods also bring a higher monetary and time cost. In addition, when the severity of pulmonary conditions changes, audible symptoms change ... -
What similarities can municipalities experience in crisis management?
(Conference object; Konferansebidrag, 2017-06)Municipalities have an important role in crisis management. The Norwegian emergency principles of responsibility, parity and proximity are central, and the government expects municipalities to take care of crises in their area in accordance with the civil protection law. Due to the varying natures of different crises, one can expect crisis management to take different paths. This paper challenges ... -
Averaged Solvent Embedding Potential Parameters for Multiscale Modeling of Molecular Properties
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel, 2016-03-03)We derive and validate averaged solvent parameters for embedding potentials to be used in polarizable embedding quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) molecular property calculations of solutes in organic solvents. The parameters are solvent-specific atom-centered partial charges and isotropic polarizabilities averaged over a large number of geometries of solvent molecules. The use ... -
The Blue–Violet Color of Pentamethylbismuth: A Visible Spin-Orbit Effect
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2016-12-22)Two-component relativistic time-dependent density functional theory calculations with spin-orbit coupling predict yellow and orange–red absorption for BiPh5 and BiMe5, respectively, providing an excellent explanation for their respective violet and blue–violet colors. According to the calculations, the visible absorption is clearly attributable to a single transition from a ligand-based HOMO ... -
Unified detection system for automatic, real-time, accurate animal detection in camera trap images from the arctic tundra
(Master thesis; Mastergradsoppgave, 2017-06-01)A more efficient and effective approach for detecting animal species in digital images is required. Every winter, the Climate-ecological Observatory for Arctic Tundra (COAT) project deploys several dozen camera traps in eastern Finnmark, Norway. These cameras capture large volumes of images that are used to study and document the impact of climate changes on animal populations. Currently, the images ... -
Swirlwave. Cloudless wide area friend-to-friend networking middleware for smartphones
(Master thesis; Mastergradsoppgave, 2017-05-07)Swirlwave is a middleware that enables peer-to-peer and distributed computing for Internet-connected devices with the following characteristics: The devices lack publicly reachable IP addresses, they can be expected to disconnect from the network for periods of time, and they frequently change network locations. This is the typical case for smartphones. The middleware fits into the friend-to-friend ... -
Distributed media versioning
(Master thesis; Mastergradsoppgave, 2017-05-15)It is still strangely difficult to backup and synchronize data. Cloud computing solves the problem by centralizing everything and letting someone else handle the backups. But what about situations with low connectivity or sensitive data? For this, software developers have an interesting distributed, decentralized, and partition-tolerant data storage system right at their fingertips: distributed ... -
Studies on selectivity determinants of protein kinase inhibitor binding
(Doctoral thesis; Doktorgradsavhandling, 2017-06-09)Protein kinases are involved in many essential cellular processes, and are regulated in a dynamic manner by the movement of domains or motifs via interaction with various proteins and substrates. Protein kinase deregulation can lead to a variety of diseases, including cancer and diabetes. Protein kinase A (PKA) has been a prototype to study the entire family, including for studies in drug discovery ... -

Stress distribution calculations through a snow slab of varying hardness. Comparison with stability evaluation in the field
(Master thesis; Mastergradsoppgave, 2017-05-05)Field observations are the main tools for assessing the snow stability concerning dry snow slab avalanche release. Often, theoretical studies cannot directly be translated into useful information for avalanche recreationists and forecasters in the field, and vice versa; field observations are not always objective and quantifiable for theoretical studies. Moreover, numerical models often oversimplify ...
