Effect of Codend Circumference on the Size Selection of Square-Mesh Codends in Trawl Fisheries
(Peer reviewed; Journal article; Tidsskriftsartikkel, 2016-07-29)It is well established that increasing mesh number in the circumference of a diamond-mesh trawl codend can reduce size selection for round fish, whereas selection for flat fish species is unaffected. This effect has also been documented in Mediterranean trawl fisheries. In contrast, no information is available with regard to the effect of increasing mesh number in the circumference of square-mesh ... -
Extracellular tannase-producing bacteria detected in the digestive tracts of freshwater fishes (Actinopterygii: Cyprinidae and Cichlidae)
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2016)Background. Although, presence of tannase-producing and/or tannin tolerant gut bacteria has been documented in ruminants and non-ruminant herbivores, the topic is rarely addressed in fi sh. The present study aimed at enumeration of autochthonous tannase-producing bacteria in the gut of freshwater teleosts.
Materials and methods. This study covered seven freshwater teleost fi sh species: rohu, ... -
Broadening the horizon of size selectivity in trawl gears
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2016-09-12)The discussion of alternative harvest patterns in commercial fisheries has been raised by stock assessment and fishery modelers, especially in the wider context of balanced harvesting. But often, these theoretical approaches propose alternative exploitation patterns that are difficult to achieve within the current limitations in the selectivity characteristics of fishing gears, such as trawl gears. ... -
Effects of dietary Lactobacillus plantarum and AHL lactonase on the control of Aeromonas hydrophila infection in tilapia
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2016-04-20)This study addressed the effects of dietary Lactobacillus plantarum or/and N-acylated homoserine lactonase (AHL lactonase) on controlling Aeromonas hydrophila infection in juvenile hybrid tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus♀ × O. aureus ♂). Fish were fed Lb. plantarum subsp. plantarum strain JCM1149 (108 CFU/g feed) or/and AHL lactonase AIO6 (4 U/g) and were exposed to a chronic challenge of A. hydrophila ... -
Terra nullius, Inuit Habitation and Norse Occupation with Special Emphasis on the 1933 East Greenland Case
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2016-05)Sovereignty acquired by occupation entails “recognize[d] title based on discovery,” “a reasonable period [of] … effective occupation of the region claimed to be discovered” and “the continuous and peaceful display of State authority.” Only terra nullius is subject to occupation. A territory inhabited by indigenous groups that sustain social and political organization may impede an occupying power ... -
Use conflicts in ecosystem-based management - The case of oil versus fisheries
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2016-01-30)Coastal states around the world are currently adopting an integrated and ecosystem-based approach to the management of coastal and ocean areas. The main aim is to promote resource use while protecting the integrity of the marine ecosystems. Focus is therefore on the conflict between economic development and conservation. Less attention is paid to the complex uses of the ocean and the conditions for ... -
Dietary intake of cod and scallop reduces atherosclerotic burden in female apolipoprotein E-deficient mice fed a Western-type high fat diet for 13 weeks
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2016-02-02)Background: It is now increasingly recognized that the beneficial effects of seafood consumption is not limited to lipids and fatty acid, but that the protein part, i.e., peptides and amino acids, together with vitamins and even unknown bioactive constituents also are important for disease prevention. This study was designed to evaluate the putative anti-atherogenic effects of different ... -
Novel antimicrobial peptides EeCentrocins 1, 2 and EeStrongylocin 2 from the Edible sea urchin Echinus esculentus have 6-br-trp post-translational modifications
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2016-03-23)The global problem of microbial resistance to antibiotics has resulted in an urgent need to develop new antimicrobial agents. Natural antimicrobial peptides are considered promising candidates for drug development. Echinoderms, which rely on innate immunity factors in the defence against harmful microorganisms, are sources of novel antimicrobial peptides. This study aimed to isolate and characterise ... -

CRISP Work Package 5 - Top quality trawl captured fish
(Conference object; Konferansebidrag, 2016-08-16)The overall goal for CRISP (WP 5) is to contribute to, and develop, the competitive power of the trawling fleet by implement new technology and knowledge. The focus is on the processing, from when the fish is in the trawl at the seabed until the processed and finished raw material is packed and in storage. -

Preclinical and clinical studies on antioxidative, antihypertensive and cardioprotective effect of marine proteins and peptides - A review
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2016-11-18)High seafood consumption has traditionally been linked to a reduced risk of cardiovascular diseases, mainly due to the lipid lowering effects of the long chained omega 3 fatty acids. However, fish and seafood are also excellent sources of good quality proteins and emerging documentation show that, upon digestion, these proteins are sources for bioactive peptides with documented favorable ... -

Enzymatic pre-treatment increases the protein bioaccessibility and extractability in dulse (Palmaria palmata)
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2016-10-26)Several common protein extraction protocols have been applied on seaweeds, but extraction yields have been limited. The aims of this study were to further develop and optimize existing extraction protocols and to examine the effect of enzymatic pre-treatment on bioaccessibility and extractability of seaweed proteins. Enzymatic pre-treatment of seaweed samples resulted in a three-fold increase ... -
Bioaccumulation and effects of parent and alkylated PAHs in an Arctic marine amphipod (Gammarus setosus) originating from pristine and historically contaminated sites in Svalbard. Implications for sensitivity and adaptation
(Master thesis; Mastergradsoppgave, 2016-09-15)The objectives of the study were to assess the bioaccumulation and genotoxic effects of PAHs and their alkylated PAHs from marine diesel fuel and coal polluted sediments in two populations of Gammarus setosus. Testing whether the alkylated forms are bioaccumulating more than their parent compounds, the degree of oxidative stress and ulterior DNA SSBs in the amphipods, as well as possible adaptation ... -
Causes and consequences of fleet diversity in fisheries: The case of the Norwegian Barents Sea cod fishery
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2016-05-25)Fisheries operate under fluctuating environmental conditions, targeting fish stocks that appear in varying densities in different areas, often with abrupt and unexpected local changes. Physical conditions, markets and management regulations constrain vessels in different and varying ways. These factors all contribute to forming the fleet diversity we find in most fisheries. Here, a simulation model ...
