Målet med dette studiet var å analysere grønlandsselens (Pagophilus groenlandicus) beiting om sommeren i svalbardområdet for 2004, 2005 og 2006. Totalt ble 150 grønlandsseler samt 125 fecesprøver innsamlet i to underområder (øst og vest) i det sørlige svalbardområdet i mai-juni 2004-2006. I 2006 ble det gjennomført ressurskartlegging ved bruk av akustikk og tråling, hvor tråldataene ble benyttet til å estimere tilgjengeligheten av potensielle byttedyr i miljøet. Analyser av tarminnholdet til selene viste at de hadde beitet hovedsakelig på krill og polartorsk. Det ble funnet forskjell i seldietten mellom innsamlingsårene, hvor krill dominerte i 2004, mens polartorsk, torsk og annen fisk dominerte i 2005 og 2006. Artsammensetningen i dietten til selene varierte mellom det østlige og vestlige innsamlingsområdet. I vest bestod tarminnholdet hovedsakelig av krill, mens i øst var det polartorsk og annen fisk som dominerte. Fecesprøvene var også dominert av krill i vest, men innholdet i øst bestod hovedsakelig av krill og fisk, særlig torsk og gapeflyndre. Tidligere studier har vist at byttedyrforekomsten i tarm og feces for samme områder er lik, dette var imidlertid ikke tilfelle for prøvene i 2005 og 2006. Preferanseundersøkelsen i 2006, viste at grønlandsselene hadde sterk preferanse for polartorsk, mens den viste antipreferanse for torsk, gapeflyndre og krill.
