Trans-polar drift-pathways of riverine European microplastic
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2022-03-17)High concentrations of microplastic particles are reported across the Arctic Ocean–yet no meaningful point sources, suspension timelines, or accumulation areas have been identified. Here we use Lagrangian particle advection simulations to model the transport of buoyant microplastic from northern European rivers to the high Arctic, and compare model results to the flux of sampled synthetic particles ... -
Securitising the Future: Dystopian Migration Discourses in Poland and the Czech Republic
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2022-06-09)This paper presents findings of a comparative study carried out in Poland and the Czech Republic, which analysed the societal attitudes towards migration and migrants in Europe. Our research shows that the reaction to migration in Poland and the Czech Republic constitutes a reversed (bottom up) securitisation. Moreover, contrary to the majority of security challenges where the immediate threats are ... -

(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2022-01-28)Carbapenem resistance caused by metallo-β-lactamases is a serious global challenge that, if not tackled efficiently, is expected to lead to millions of deaths in the coming decades. Verona-integron encoded metallo-β-lactamase 2 (VIM-2) is a bacterial enzyme that has been reported from multidrug-resistant nosocomial isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and other Gram-negative pathogens. As it hydrolyzes ... -
Structure and Mechanism of a Cold-Adapted Bacterial Lipase
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2022-05-03)The structural origin of enzyme cold-adaptation has been the subject of considerable research efforts in recent years. Comparative studies of orthologous mesophilic–psychrophilic enzyme pairs found in nature are an obvious strategy for solving this problem, but they often suffer from relatively low sequence identity of the enzyme pairs. Small bacterial lipases adapted to distinctly different ... -
Grounding-line fan formation during an Early Holocene readvance of Aldegondabreen, Svalbard.
(Mastergradsoppgave; Master thesis, 2021-12-10)In this study, two ridge-shaped cross-valley sedimentary landforms, in the lower forefield of Aldegondabreen, a small valley glacier on the west coast of Spitsbergen, Svalbard, were studied to reconstruct the Holocene glacial history of Aldegondabreen prior to the Little Ice Age. Sedimentological and geomorphological methods were used in conjunction with radiocarbon dating to examine the sediments ... -
Stochastic Modelling and Numerical Simulations of Radial Filament Motion and Average Profiles at the Boundary of Fusion Plasmas
(Master thesis; Mastergradsoppgave, 2022-05-15)<p>The boundary region of magnetically confined plasmas is well known to have inherently fluctuating parameters. Advances in experimental measurements and numerical computations have revealed that the fluctuation-driven transport of particles and heat across the magnetic field lines is mainly dominated by the radial motion of blob-like filament structures. These structures, which are localized in ... -
Numerical Simulations of Turbulence at the Boundary of Fusion Plasma
(Mastergradsoppgave; Master thesis, 2022-05-15)Numerical simulations of reduced fluid models describing magnetized plasmas have previously been used to study the boundary of fusion plasmas extensively. A common approximation applied to these models is the so-called Boussinesq approximation. One of the requirements for the Boussinesq approximation to be applicable is that the background particle density is significantly higher than the fluctuations ... -
Greedy weights for matroids
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2020-12-19)We introduce greedy weights of matroids, inspired by those for linear codes. We show that a Wei duality holds for two of these types of greedy weights for matroids. Moreover we show that in the cases where the matroids involved are associated to linear codes, our definitions coincide with those for codes. Thus our Wei duality is a generalization of that for linear codes given by Schaathun. In ... -
Evolution of ore-forming fluids in a post-collisional porphyry Cu-Au system: A case study from the Bučim deposit, Republic of North Macedonia
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2022-04-27)The Bučim porphyry Cu-Au deposit is situated in the westernmost part of the Serbo-Macedonian Massif, Republic of North Macedonia. The deposit is hosted by Precambrian gneisses with tectonically imbedded rare lenses of Palaeozoic amphibolites. The mineralization is spatially associated with intrusions of andesitic to trachyandesitic magmatic bodies. The geochemical signature of the intrusions and ... -
Noise-intensification data augmented machine learning for day-ahead wind power forecast
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2022-06-10)The day-ahead wind power forecast is essential for the designation of dispatch schedules for the grid and rational arrangement for production planning by power generation companies. This paper specifically investigates the effect of adding noise to the original wind data for forecasting models. Linear regression, artificial neural networks, and adaptive boosting predictive models based on ... -
Evaluating the Predictivity of Virtual Screening for Abl Kinase Inhibitors to Hinder Drug Resistance
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2013-06-08)Virtual screening methods are now widely used in early stages of drug discovery, aiming to rank potential inhibitors. However, any practical ligand set (of active or inactive compounds) chosen for deriving new virtual screening approaches cannot fully represent all relevant chemical space for potential new compounds. In this study, we have taken a retrospective approach to evaluate virtual screening ... -
Characteristics and failure mechanisms of the unstable rock slope Dusnjárga
(Mastergradsoppgave; Master thesis, 2022-05-15)Large slowly creeping rock slope deformations, with an annual displacement in the range of millimeters to centimeters, have been prone to rapid catastrophic failures in the past. This master thesis focuses on the unstable rock slope of Dusnjárga in Northern Norway. A sudden rapid failure of Dusnjárga would pose a threat to the local society in Lille Altafjord and Burfjord, due to potential secondary ... -
The effect of lithology and microstructure on the deformation of unstable rock slopes in northern Norway
(Mastergradsoppgave; Master thesis, 2022-05-14)Rock avalanches are a type of natural catastrophe in Norway with very high consequences, and the alpine landscape makes Troms and Finnmark County the region with the highest frequency of unstable rock slopes. The bedrock geology is highly relevant to assess and understand the failure mechanisms, and mechanical properties that influence deformation in rock slopes. Pre-existing structures and lithological ... -
Sedimentology and architecture of a deep-water turbidite system; Kongsfjord Formation, Finnmark, northern Norway
(Mastergradsoppgave; Master thesis, 2022-05-15)The Kongsfjord Formation is a Late Precambrian deep-marine sedimentary succession exposed along the northern coastline of the Varanger Peninsula, northern Norway. Several studies in the 1970s and 1980s led to the recognition of the Formation as an ancient submarine fan system and to the identification of several architectural elements, including lobes and channels. However, there are no published ... -
Exploring Palladium-Catalyzed Cross-Coupling at Nitrile Groups
(Master thesis; Mastergradsoppgave, 2022-05-16)Carbon-Carbon cross-coupling is a useful method that is used to connect carbons of different molecules to create a larger molecule. This is particularly powerful in synthesis of complicated molecules because it allows for different parts of the target molecule to be worked with separately before they are connected, which reduces the restrictions on the methods used during synthesis. One major drawback ... -
Personalized Nudges with Edge Computing

Quantitative assessment of two oil-in-ice surface drift algorithms
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2022-02-04)The ongoing reduction in extent and thickness of sea ice in the Arctic might result in an increase of oil spill risk due to the expansion of shipping activity and oil exploration shift towards higher latitudes. This work assessed the response of two oil-in-ice surface drift models implemented in an open-source Lagrangian framework. By considering two numerical modeling experiments, our main finding ... -
Upper cretaceous-paleogene stratigraphy and development of the Mímir High, Vøring transform margin, Norwegian Sea
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2020-09-19)Transform margins represent strike-slip type of plate boundaries that form during continental breakup and initial ocean opening. They are often characterized by margin-parallel highs with exposed pre- and syn-rift sequences. The Vøring Transform Margin, offshore mid-Norway, initiated in the earliest Eocene during the opening of the NE Atlantic. Here, 2D seismic reflection data reveal a transform ... -
A Phenomenographic Analysis Of Students’ Experience Of Geological Time
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2021-06-01)Geological time is by many geoscience instructors considered a threshold concept for geoscience students, being a central concept for how we experience geosceince phenomena that takes place on a spatio-temporal scale ranging from micro (e.g. cloud formation) to macro (e.g. plate tectonics). If one wishes to understand geoscience phenomena that goes beyond human perception, one must move from the ... -
Chiral recognition by fullerenes: CHFClBr enantiomers in the C82 cage
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2016-08-18)Density-functional theory and symmetry-adapted perturbation theory calculations on complexes of the enantiomers of CHFClBr with the most stable isomer of C82-3 fullerene show that despite the guests being too large for the host cage, they are nevertheless stabilized by electrostatic interactions. The complexation leads to considerable strain on the cage and the guests accompanied by ...
