• Challenges, Opportunities, and Key Questions in Research for Mathematics in Indigenous and Migrational (MIM) Contexts Through a Language Focused Lens

Culligan, Karla; Dewolfe, Sacha; Simensen, Anita Movik (Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2023)
This paper presents some challenges, opportunities, key questions, and ways forward for research in mathematics in Indigenous and Migrational (MIM) contexts as discussed by the two featured panelists and mediated by the moderator in the closing symposium of the MIM Conference in Alta, Norway in November 2022. Punctuated with quotations, photos and images, the paper begins by introducing the three ...
    • Constructs and methods for identifying patterns of interactions in mathematics classrooms

Simensen, Anita Movik; Huru, Hilja Lisa; Wagner, David Richard; Andersson, Annica (Chapter; Bokkapittel, 2022)
In this working group, we use data from our investigation of storylines available to minoritised mathematics students. We invite participants to reflect on their own research projects that investigate patterns of interaction. Together we consider the constructs of storylines and other alternatives, the challenges of identifying them, and the insights that become available due to our methodological choices.
    • Gifted Students’ Actualization of a Rich Task’s Mathematical Potential When Working in Small Groups

Simensen, Anita Movik; Olsen, Mirjam Harkestad (Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2024-01-31)
This article examines gifted students’ (ages 13–16) groupwork on a rich task in mathematics. This study was conducted in Norway, which has an inclusive education system that does not allow fixed-ability grouping. The purpose of this study was to better understand how to cultivate mathematical learning opportunities for gifted learners in inclusive education systems. The analysis was conducted ...
    • Mathematics Education Storylines and Cultures in Indigenous and Migrational Contexts

Simensen, Anita Movik; Huru, Hilja Lisa; Andersson, Annica; Herbel-Eisenmann, Beth Ann; Wagner, David Richard (Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2023)
In November 2022, we organised a conference where researchers, teachers, elders, doctoral students and prospective teachers from “all over the world” were invited to participate in conversations about mathematics education in Indigenous and/or migrational contexts. The conference took place in Alta, Northern Norway. In this area, Sami, Kven and Norwegian peoples live together side by side. This is ...
    • Seeking a Strength-Based Approach to Assessment in a Multicultural Context: A Participator Approach

Simensen, Anita Movik; Johannessen, Ane Marthe; Huru, Hilja Lisa (Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel, 2023-06)
In this paper we present our reflections on collaborative tests in mathematics as a strength-based approach to assessment in upper secondary school. Our reflections are based on analysis of studentstudent interactions during collaborative test situations and post-test interviews with the students. The participating students are from a town in Northern Norway and the surrounding areas, where the ...
    • Storylines in Voices of Frustration: Implications for Mathematics Teacher Education in Changing Times

Andersson, Annica; Foyn, Trine Mette; Simensen, Anita Movik; Wagner, David Richard (Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2023-08-09)
We have interviewed becoming mathematics teachers, in the last semester of their education, asking how they experience their time as teacher students with the focus on inclusive teaching. In their forthcoming daily work, they will be responsible for arranging for inclusive teaching that addresses all the learners’ needs in mathematics. We believe the voices of future teachers are important to include ...
