Fleire hevdar vi er kome i ei ”krise” i dagens psykiatriske praksis. Fagfolk begynner i større grad å bekymre seg for inflasjon i diagnosar og kome med alternative syn på handtering av psykiske lidingar. Er dagens psykiatriske diagnosesystem klar for utskifting? Denne oppgåvas hensikt er å skildre korleis psykologar tenkjer kring diagnosar og diagnostisering, samt diagnosars rolle i klinisk praksis og samfunn. Det er nytta kvalitativ metode og oppgåva er basert på intervju av åtte kliniske psykologar, den er skrevet med eit sosialkonstruktivistisk perspektiv og med ein diskursanalytisk metodikk. Oppgåva inneheld ein teoridel, resultatdel og diskusjonsdel. Resultatdelen er inndelt i tre ulike diskursar der eg ser på diagnosen på ulike nivå; ein omgrepsdiskurs som ser på korleis psykologar skildrar diagnosen og den psykiske lidinga. Ein systemdiskurs som tar for seg korleis diagnosen blir praktisert og ein patologiseringsdiskurs som ser på konsekvensane dette kan få for samfunnet. I denne oppgåva blir det illustrert korleis dei ulike diskursane kjempar mot kvarandre. Gjennom diskursiv kamp kjem det fram korleis ”diagnosen” har vore og er i stadig endring og bevegelse. Diagnosesystemet er i endring og det er ueinigheit om denne endringa skal skje gjennom ein gradvis prosess eller ein radikal utskifting av systemet.
